Does anybody know whether we need the higher version or patches for
TCPWARE on ALPHA Open VMSv8.3?

Here is the problem:

Platform: Alpha DS-25
Original OpenVMS version : v7.3-2
Original TCPWARE version : v5.6-2
everything is fine

Alpha DS-25 upgrade to OpenVMS version V8.2
TCPWARE version upgrade to V5.7-2
everything is fine

Alpha DS-25 upgrade to OpenVMS version v8.3
TCPWARE version V5.7-2 reinstall
When startup the TCPware using the following command and error comes up

NETCU START/IP EWA-0 xx.xxx.xx.xxx/MASK=255.255.255.0/FLAGS=(NOTRAILER)

LAN Device EWA-0 is not operational

TCPWARE_NETCP_F_ACCVIO access violation reason mask=00, virtual address
= FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF, PC=FFFFFFFF80A94900, PS=0000001B

I try to install a fresh copy of OpenVMS v8.3 and TCPWARE v5.7-2 to the
system and same error comes out.

Yup. DRIVERS_V572Pxxx

------------------
UCX$IPC_SHR - provide a new version of UCX$IPC_SHR for
OpenVMS V8.3 and later. This patch must be
installed after installing OpenVMS and before
starting TCPware.

NOTE: You must reboot your system after installing this patch in order
to load the new driver(s).

btw: Why didn't you try to install all available V5.7-2 ECOs and see
if the problem goes away? This is far easier, than installing VMS fresh...

Since you are going to VMS V8.3 you'll need the DRIVERS_V572P022 patch
(or later, the latest is DRIVERS_V572P050) as VMS changed the expected
transfer vector for UCX$IPC_SHR in V8.3. This patch may fix your
problem as I have a vague recollection of a similar problem occurring on
Itanium systems until the changes were made for UCX$IPC_SHR.

You'll probably also want the NTP patch so that your system handles the
change from day light saving time to standard time on the correct date.

Hello!

Is there a way to implementing failover and load balancing under TCPWare-TCP on
several Giga/Fast/EtherNet cards like HP TCP/IP FailSafe ?

Thanks!

Yes, it has had that (called Paired Network Interface) since TCPware
V5.4 was released in 1999 (which was before TCP/IP Services had it).

See the documentation for NETCU SET INTERFACE/COMMON_LINK in Chapter 2
of the NETCU Guide:

Ruslan,

We did a VAX to Alpha upgrade about 2 years ago in Toronto and the Cust used this feature and it worked very well. At that time I believe they were using TCPware V5.6.

To put things in perspective, with dual routers trunked and dual connections to each NIC card that were on different PCI buses, the Cust did a test that worked very well. Simply telnet via the primary link from a remote system, enter a command like "monitor system" on the remote terminal to get some activity on the link, then pull the Ethernet cable from the back of the primary system NIC, watch the link fail-over and with the exception of a 2-3 sec delay in the screen, the screen kept refreshing as if nothing had happened. We then did a test by powering off one of the routers and the same thing happened, small 2-3 sec delay, but terminal refreshing kept going after that.

You can even monitor the link on the system from the console and watch the fail-over occur. Put the Ethernet cable back in and after about 20 sec's, the link failed back with no errors.

Cust was quite pleased with this.

Ruslan,

As I recall, in addition to the availability features, the TCPware paired network interface also does transmit load balancing i.e. when sending, it will use both NIC's that have been defined to transmit data. This is likely a good candidate for things like FTP transfers or large file sharing. I would also imaging this would be good for serving busy web pages with large files.

Hello, Kerry!

Thanks. I continue investigation of usability paired interfaces.
